April 20, 2009 Burke, VA - Democratic Lieutenant Governor candidate Jon Bowerbank launched his three day statewide Jobs Tour at the Burke Centre Virginia Railway Express (VRE) station, where he met with VRE riders and discussed his plan to improve Virginia's transportation system and grow the Commonwealth's economy. "We need to invest in improving Virginia's infrastructure, and expanding public transportation options, such as the VRE system, is essential if we are serious about fixing our transportation problems. If we do not act swiftly and boldly, our infrastructure crisis will not only deter businesses and impede economic growth, but it may also cause businesses to leave Virginia. As Lieutenant Governor I will use my experience providing infrastructure services throughout the Commonwealth to take real action and fix Virginia's transportation systems," Bowerbank said. The Jobs Tour coincides with the release of Bowerbank's Jobs Plan, a detailed 27-page plan to create good paying jobs and transform Virginia's economy for the future. Each stop on the Tour will emphasize a different aspect of Jon's Jobs Plan, from improving Virginia's infrastructure to investing in renewable and alternative energy solutions to fostering a positive business environment that benefits both workers and businesses to prioritizing innovation at our colleges and research centers.

On Wednesday I attended the 61st Annual Shad Planking in Wakefield, Virginia. I had been really looking forward to taking part in the event which started as a relatively small gathering and has grown into one of the major traditions in the Virginia political community. Even though there was a forecast of rain and the wind made the air a little chilly, the large crowd helped to illustrate why this is a great way for candidates like me to interact with great people from all across the Commonwealth of Virginia. Of course, there’s also the excitement of the friendly competition surrounding the “sign wars” which I believe my team did quite well in. We had an excavator lifting up some Bowerbank signs well into the air above the parking lot and we had thousands of signs lining the streets into the event, including signs some 20 miles out of Wakefield on 460. None of the other candidates, including Bill Bolling, had more than 100 signs. At the actual event I was honored to be able to talk to people from all across the political spectrum about what I will do if elected Lt. Governor. A lot of people spoke to me about how the economy has impacted their family and how they want a leader who will work to increase the number of well paying jobs in the Commonwealth. As a business leader in Southwest Virginia, I started a business in my garage that has now grown to employee hundreds of people. The skills I developed during this process would allow me to help create programs that would spur job creation and people who came out to Wakefield yesterday seemed to be energetic about the possibility of electing a Lt. Governor who could play a strong role in improving our economy. In fact, I got several people who came in as Bill Bolling voters to take off their Bolling stickers and put on one of our stickers. Also, I’d like to simply thank the Wakefield Ruritan Club who hosted the Shad Planking and all of the great people who took time out of their day to attend the event and talk with me about what they’d like their next Lt. Governor to accomplish. Finally, to see some photos of the event you can visit this link. |
Brings In Over $100,000 More Than Closest Opponent, Out-raises Incumbent Republican
Alexandria, VA - The campaign of Lieutenant Governor candidate Jon Bowerbank today announced that it has received more than $494,000 during the first quarter reporting period, leading his nearest competitor by over $100,000. Bowerbank also has more than $431,000 cash on hand, more than any other Democratic lieutenant governor candidate in the race.
"The numbers from this reporting period show Jon emerging as the leader in this three-way race," Bowerbank campaign manager Jon Paul Lupo said. "He leads in money received, cash on hand, and campaign organization. The campaign collected the most petition signatures of any statewide candidate, our staff and volunteers placed thousands more signs than our closest competitors at Shad Planking in Wakefield this week, and Jon's message of developing a new energy economy in Virginia is catching on with voters. And Jon will be able to spread that message throughout the Commonwealth better than any other candidate in the campaign. It is clear that Jon Bowerbank is the best candidate to beat Bill Bolling in November."
Jon Bowerbank is the owner of a successful energy services company that employs hundreds of people in Virginia and throughout the country. He has also served as an operations manager in a Fortune 10 company in numerous states, and has both a business and technical background. He currently serves as the at-large member of the Russell County Board of Supervisors, and he is a member of the Virginia Association of Counties Finance and Transportation Committees.
Bowerbank has spent the last year traveling around Virginia spreading his message of change. As Lieutenant Governor, Jon will be committed to improving Virginia's infrastructure, investing in our schools and education programs, and using effective business practices to create jobs and transform Virginia's economy for a new energy future.

Submits More Than Any Other Statewide Candidate
Alexandria, VA - Today, Democratic Lieutenant Governor candidate Jon Bowerbank officially filed petitions to place his name on the ballot for the June 9th primary. Bowerbank submitted 18,133 signatures, well over the 10,000 signature requirement, and more than any other statewide candidate in Virginia this year. "I am very proud and grateful for the tremendous effort that so many supporters from every corner of the Commonwealth put forward in this petition effort. We could not have achieved this significant milestone without their help and support. This was an incredible effort of grassroots and organization that is indicative of the strong momentum we have going forward," said Jon Bowerbank. This record achievement marks the second major milestone that Bowerbank has reported this week, having reported earlier that his campaign has $425,000 cash on hand, more than any other Lieutenant Governor candidate's campaign. This cash on hand amount is also significant given that it is four times more than the $107,000 that Democratic Lieutenant Governor primary winner and former Congresswoman Leslie Byrne reported at the same period in 2005.

"Bolling Lets Virginia Families Suffer and Puts Politics and Party First"
Alexandria, VA - Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor Jon Bowerbank today sharply criticized Bill Bolling for opposing federal stimulus money for programs that would help those Virginians most hurt by the economic crisis. The rebuke came after the Virginia House GOP voted to reject stimulus money which would expand unemployment benefits to help Virginia families make ends meet.
"With nearly 300,000 Virginians unemployed, families across the Commonwealth need this aid. But Bill Bolling put politics first and came out early and often against all stimulus funding, including the unemployment aid Republicans rejected yesterday. He is allowing Virginia's families to continue to suffer to score political points. We need a Lieutenant Governor who will stand up and fight to help Virginians when they need it, and that's the change I plan to bring to the office," Bowerbank said. As Lieutenant Governor, Jon will be committed to improving Virginia's infrastructure, finding real solutions to our energy crisis, and using effective business practices to create jobs and fix Virginia's economy.

Strongly Urges Board to Increase Teacher Pay
Russell County, VA - Jon Bowerbank, Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor and Russell County Board of Supervisors At-Large member, secured passage of $1.6 million in General Obligation school bonds for the purpose of financing capital projects for education at last night's Russell County Board of Supervisors meeting. One of the areas the funding will go to is improving school buildings and making them more safe, modern, and energy efficient. "As the parent of three children, two who currently attend Russell County Public Schools, I am pleased to approve these bonds which will provide funding for education projects that our schools so desperately need. Like so many other parents, I depend on the public education system to prepare my children for the future, and nothing is more important to me. In fact, my son, Sean Thomas, currently attends Elk Garden Elementary school, which is one of the oldest continually used public school buildings in Virginia. Our children are competing in a modern global economy, and they should be learning in a 21st century educational environment. This money will help ensure our children have that chance," Bowerbank said. Bowerbank also advocated for an increase in teacher pay for Russell County Public School teachers.
"I am proud that we were able to raise teacher salaries by double-digits in Russell County last year. This year is going to be more difficult. With the economy struggling and revenues down an increase this year is no guarantee. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try. It is my priority, and the priority of all of our board members, to improve our schools and that means paying the people who teach our children the salary they deserve. Russell County should be a leader in the effort to raise teacher pay and I am running for Lieutenant Governor because I want to be able to reward teachers across the Commonwealth for their service and commitment to my children and all of our children," said Bowerbank.
"I am grateful that Jon Bowerbank and the rest of the Board were able to secure so much funding for our schools, especially given the economic climate," said Richard Hess, a Russell County public school teacher and former President of the Russell County Education Association. "I also appreciated Jon's speech in favor of increasing teacher pay; Jon is fighting hard to get that in the budget. It shows that Jon understands the value of teachers and our struggle to stay in the profession while also making ends meet and providing for our families. This is a huge win for educators, parents and children in Russell County." |
